It is very simple. Instead of trying to land on Mars, try to land
on its moon Phobos first, only 6000 km away from Mars, and
then the landing on Mars is going to be a piece of cake !
The landing on Phobos is much much easier, because of its zero
gravity (almost), the lack of dangerous winds, tornados etc often
occuring on Mars. Also there is not nessasery for the spacecraft
to have shields against overheating, as it enters the Martian
atmosphere. All these means less cost of the mission and more
safety.
(The proposal is made by John E. Brandenburg Ph. D. in his
non-fictional book ''Life and death on Mars'' where he states
that the found isotops of xenon and argon on Mars prove that
a thermonuclear disaster had happened there in the past!)
